New Mexico’s creative economy is powered by artists, entrepreneurs, small businesses, organizations, and communities across the state, and the New Mexico Creative Industries Division is working to help that ecosystem grow.
For our latest Community Highlight, we spoke with Division Director Shani Harvie about how the NM Creative Industries Division has evolved since launching in 2023, the resources and opportunities available to New Mexico’s creative community, and what’s ahead.
In just its first three fiscal years, the Division has awarded $4 million in funding, supported more than a thousand creatives and creative businesses, developed statewide resources, and brought creatives together through programs like NM CreativeCon.
For Shani, that connection is an important part of the work:
“The biggest takeaway for me was how much possibility grows when creatives and public sector folks are in the same room with one another, and how much hope and direction can come from feeling part of a statewide ecosystem rather than navigating in isolation.”

I`ve stopped trying to be good at a few things.
Not because I`ve given up, but because my priorities have shifted in my 30s, and I`ve realized they`re not actually goals worth chasing.
Somewhere along the way, I had picked up the idea that success looked like overproductivity, a showroom home, and knowing everything. Turns out that version of success is exhausting.
Instead, I will be prioritizing:
- Rest without guilt
- Progress instead of perfection
- Curiosity over having all the answers
- Boundaries before burnout

Community Highlight: Santa Fe Indian Market
Every August, Santa Fe becomes home to one of the most significant celebrations of Indigenous art, culture, and entrepreneurship in the world.
Produced by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), the Santa Fe Indian Market brings together more than 1,000 Native artists representing over 200 Tribal Nations for a weekend that transforms the city into a vibrant showcase of creativity, culture, and community.
What makes Indian Market so special isn`t just the art. It`s the opportunity for artists to connect directly with collectors, visitors, and supporters while sharing stories, traditions, innovation, and cultural knowledge through their work. Jewelry, pottery, textiles, painting, sculpture, fashion, etc. The event highlights both contemporary and traditional Indigenous artistic expression.
